CellSentials Study Shows Nutrition & Health Benefits

You’ve heard the argument before. “You can get all the nutrients you need from a healthy, whole-food diet.” Sure. Maybe in an ideal world. But nobody lives in an ideal world. Living in reality means admitting a supplement is an easy nutritional insurance plan. It’s a quick way to help ensure you consume the nutrition your cells need to thrive every day. *

Of course, all supplements aren’t created equal. A comprehensive-formula matters. Quality ingredients that are absorbed matters. Science also matters. That’s why USANA invested in a four-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to quantify the impact of taking the USANA® CellSentials™ for one month has on healthy adults.

The four-week CellSentials study found taking a full dose of Vita Antioxidant and Core Minerals twice a day improved a number of nutrition and health measures. This research shows daily supplementation is helpful for raising key nutrient levels in your body and supporting your well-being.*

USANA Science Summary

  • USANA published the results of a double-blind, placebo-controlled study conducted in 23 participants for four weeks.
  • Healthy adults, ages 23 to 43, took two tablets of Vita Antioxidant and two tablets of Core Minerals, twice a day.
  • Levels of vitamins B6, B12, folate, C, D, E, and K increased significantly.
  • Levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), one of your body’s innate protective antioxidants, increased.
  • Support for healthy homocysteine and HDL cholesterol levels already within normal range was also observed.*

The results of the CellSentials study were published in the Journal of Functional Foods in 2019.

(This study revisits and expands upon findings from previously unpublished research that showed the supplement pair raised circulating serum nutrient levels.)

Let’s take a closer look at the findings.

CellSentials Study Shows Enhanced Status of Key Nutrients

Dietary surveys often show that people don’t eat enough of several key vitamins and minerals. Why is getting enough of these nutrients a big deal?

There are many health-related reasons you need a solid foundation of nutrition. But here’s one you may not have heard before: insufficient amounts of some nutrients in your body could lead to something called “hidden hunger.”

Hidden hunger is the phenomenon where people eat enough calories in a day but still don’t have adequate levels of certain nutrients in the body. So, their body signals them to eat more in an effort to top off low nutrient stores.

This invisible form of scarcity is especially common in those who lack diversity in food choices or who eat too much processed or nutritionally deficient food. Unfortunately, many inexpensive foods tend to be low in key nutrients, which is why low-income earners can be at higher risk for hidden hunger.

For the purpose of this study, USANA narrowed the focus to vitamins that are often insufficient in average diets. This includes vitamins A, C, D, E, and K, plus some B vitamins—B6, B12, and folate.

Participants fasted for 12 hours and blood was drawn to set baseline levels before the study began. Then fasted blood samples were drawn again at the end of the four weeks. There were significant increases in blood levels of seven of the eight vitamins:

  • Vitamin B6—plays important roles in energy metabolism and maintaining healthy homocysteine levels (an amino acid—more on this below)*.
  • Vitamin B12—supports energy, nerves, healthy blood cells, and DNA synthesis; also plays a role in folate metabolism.*
  • Folate (vitamin B9)—helps make genetic material and DNA and supports healthy cell growth and function; critical for women of childbearing age to support a baby’s healthy neural tube development in the earliest days of pregnancy.*
  • Vitamin C—provides antioxidant defense and is important for immunity, production of collagen (and other compounds), and use of iron in the body.*
  • Vitamin D—supports cell health, strong bones, immunity, and nerve and muscle function.*
  • Vitamin E—provides antioxidant defense and supports cognitive health as well as liver and immune function.*
  • Vitamin K—aids blood clotting along with bone, cardiovascular, liver, muscle, and cartilage health.*

Vitamin A was also measured. However, no significant change was observed. The reason is unclear. However, it could be due to the population studied: people already sufficient in vitamin A.

Your body maintains a fairly stable amount of vitamin A in plasma. It’s tightly controlled by the liver. So, changes may only have been seen if participants were deficient.

Maintaining sufficient vitamin A is important to support eye health (night vision), immunity, reproductive health, and gene expression.*

Increasing Your Innate Protective Antioxidants with InCelligence™

The CellSentials are more than a multivitamin. They also supply nutrients that can encourage your body to create its own powerful antioxidants. Amplifying your antioxidant levels is important, because the modern world is a free-radical-generating, cell-damaging jumble of junk foods, pollutants, and stresses. *

One way your body creates antioxidants is via the Nrf2 signaling pathway. Nrf2 is a chain of cellular reactions that’s activated when your body’s cells sense they need a boost in protection against free radicals. The InCelligence Complex in Vita Antioxidant includes several nutrients that can influence this pathway, including EGCG from green tea, curcumin, and resveratrol.

One protective antioxidant produced by Nrf2 activity is superoxide dismutase (SOD). This enzyme provides a first line of defense to help suppress the formation of free radicals in cells—stopping trouble before it starts.

Those who consumed the CellSentials in this study had elevated SOD activity after four weeks. This is evidence InCelligence Technology™ in the product works to enhance your body’s natural ability to protect itself from stresses. *

Increasing SOD is a good thing. Generally, as you age, your levels tend to go down. This increases your exposure to oxidative damage that can have adverse effects on your health. On the other hand, maintaining higher levels of SOD can help support healthy aging. *

As one of the most powerful antioxidant in the cell, SOD supports your health and well-being in many ways. It limits lipid peroxidation (when free radicals attack and damage fats) to help maintain healthy tissues throughout your body. Cognitive and immune function are protected by SOD. And it also has been shown to help maintain healthy carotid artery thickness to support cardiovascular function.*

Support for Cardiovascular Health Shown in CellSentials Study

Increased SOD isn’t the only way the CellSentials support the health of your cardiovascular system. Many micronutrients in the products are linked to maintained heart health:*

  • Zinc
  • Selenium
  • Magnesium
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin K

Many phytonutrients like lycopene and resveratrol have also shown cardiovascular health support. Plus, the added coenzyme Q10 in CellSentials helps your cells make the energy needed to keep your heart beating strong.*

Heart health is one of the top wellness concerns worldwide. So, the CellSentials study looked at a number of measures to see how one month of supplementation influenced cardiovascular function. Two positive results stood out: lower homocysteine and higher HDL levels.

Homocysteine is an amino acid (a building block of proteins). If you have too much in your body, it can damage endothelial cells. These cells help your blood vessels contract and relax for circulation. That’s why keeping homocysteine levels in a normal, healthy range is important for maintaining cardiovascular function. It’s also been linked to cognitive, mood, and bone health.*

Levels of homocysteine were lowered by 12 percent in CellSentials users, compared to a 1.26 percent difference in the placebo group. This could be due to the increase seen in B12 and folate levels. Both nutrients have been shown to help maintain healthy homocysteine levels. *

HDL cholesterol (the “good” kind) was also increased in the CellSentials group. HDL finds harmful cholesterol in your bloodstream and sends it to the liver for disposal. This is why optimal levels of HDL are linked to cardiovascular health. *

The increase in HDL shows the CellSentials are a heart-smart option for maintaining healthy cholesterol levels.*

The CellSentials Study is Science You Can Use

If you take a nutritional supplement for your health, sometimes it can be hard to notice a difference in how you feel on a daily basis. Supplements are made to help you maintain the healthy body you already have. So, you may not feel much different unless you are truly deficient in a given nutrient. *

The CellSentials study helps you see the effects of using USANA’s foundational nutritional supplement for only one month. Nutrient status improves. Innate antioxidant defenses are enhanced. And your cardiovascular health is protected. *

The USANA CellSentials are a great investment in your overall wellness. They’ll help you avoid hidden hungers and meet your nutritional needs for optimal health. Make Vita Antioxidant and Core Minerals your nutritional insurance plan. Take two of each, twice a day to help ensure your cells and your body will have what they need to thrive. *
