L\u2019acide folique aide \u00e0 la formation des \u00e9l\u00e9ments constitutifs de l\u2019ADN et de l\u2019ARN n\u00e9cessaires pour la synth\u00e8se des prot\u00e9ines dans les cellules humaines. Les tissus \u00e0 croissance rapide, comme ceux d\u2019un f\u0153tus, et les cellules \u00e0 r\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9ration rapide, comme les globules rouges et les cellules immunitaires, ont des besoins particuli\u00e8rement importants en acide folique.<\/p>\n<p>Les besoins en acide folique augmentent pendant la grossesse. Les carences en acide folique sont li\u00e9es \u00e0 des probl\u00e8mes tels qu\u2019un faible poids de naissance et une incidence accrue d\u2019anomalies du tube neural, y compris l\u2019anenc\u00e9phalie et le spina bifida. Selon une \u00e9tude, les femmes \u00e0 haut risque d\u2019avoir un b\u00e9b\u00e9 souffrant d\u2019une anomalie du tube neural ont vu une baisse de ce risque allant jusqu\u2019\u00e0 72 % en prenant des suppl\u00e9ments (compl\u00e9ments) d\u2019acide folique avant et au cours de la grossesse. Les experts m\u00e9dicaux, d\u2019autres professionnels de la sant\u00e9 et l\u2019association March of Dimes recommandent que toutes les femmes en \u00e2ge de procr\u00e9er prennent un suppl\u00e9ment (compl\u00e9ment) de 400 mcg d\u2019acide folique par jour. Cette suppl\u00e9mentation prot\u00e8gerait contre la formation d\u2019anomalies du tube neural entre le moment de la conception et celui o\u00f9 la grossesse est d\u00e9tect\u00e9e. Si une femme attend d\u2019\u00eatre enceinte pour commencer \u00e0 prendre des suppl\u00e9ments (compl\u00e9ments) d\u2019acide folique, il est probablement trop tard pour pr\u00e9venir les anomalies du tube neural.<\/p>\n<p>Les carences en acide folique ont aussi \u00e9t\u00e9 li\u00e9es \u00e0 des niveaux \u00e9lev\u00e9s d\u2019homocyst\u00e9ine et \u00e0 un risque accru d\u2019accident vasculaire c\u00e9r\u00e9bral, de maladies cardiaques et de dysfonctions cognitives comme la maladie d\u2019Alzheimer.
