En raison de son importance, bon nombre de gouvernements exigent l\u2019enrichissement des grains avec du folate ou de l\u2019acide folique afin d&#8217;assurer \u00e0 leurs citoyens un acc\u00e8s quotidien r\u00e9gulier \u00e0 cette vitamine.<\/p>\n<p>Dans les pays o\u00f9 l\u2019acc\u00e8s au folate est tr\u00e8s limit\u00e9, des \u00e9tudes ont montr\u00e9 une r\u00e9duction tr\u00e8s nette de l\u2019incidence des anomalies du tube neural (ATN) chez les nourrissons de m\u00e8res ayant pris des suppl\u00e9ments d\u2019acide folique pendant leur grossesse. La prise de suppl\u00e9ments d\u2019acide folique s\u2019av\u00e8re un moyen \u00e9prouv\u00e9, s\u00fbr, efficace et abordable de r\u00e9duire le risque d\u2019ATN et d\u2019autres malformations cong\u00e9nitales dans le Tiers-monde et dans les populations \u00e0 risque partout sur la plan\u00e8te.<\/p>\n<p>Tout indique aussi que la prise de suppl\u00e9ments d\u2019acide folique peut am\u00e9liorer la sant\u00e9 cardiaque. L&#8217;American Heart Association (AHA) a publi\u00e9 l\u2019an dernier un article associant la r\u00e9duction des malformations cardiaques cong\u00e9nitales \u00e0 la consommation de\u00a0 \u00a0suppl\u00e9ments d\u2019acide folique et aussi d\u2019aliments qui en sont enrichis. Ce lien entre la vitamine B et la sant\u00e9 cardiaque laisse entendre que l\u2019acide folique peut agir afin de pr\u00e9venir un accident vasculaire c\u00e9r\u00e9bral et un infarctus du myocarde, aussi appel\u00e9 crise cardiaque.<\/p>\n<p>Caract\u00e9ris\u00e9 par une concentration \u00e9lev\u00e9e de glucose sanguin pendant et apr\u00e8s une p\u00e9riode de je\u00fbne, le diab\u00e8te est un facteur de risque connu d\u2019accident vasculaire c\u00e9r\u00e9bral. \u00c0 la suite d\u2019une \u00e9tude \u00e0 double insu randomis\u00e9e men\u00e9e pendant plusieurs ann\u00e9es, des chercheurs de plusieurs universit\u00e9s et h\u00f4pitaux en Chine ont \u00e9mis l\u2019hypoth\u00e8se d\u2019un lien entre la prise de suppl\u00e9ments d\u2019acide folique et un premier accident vasculaire c\u00e9r\u00e9bral associ\u00e9 \u00e0 un taux de glucose sanguin \u00e9lev\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Des hommes et des femmes dont l\u2019\u00e2ge variait entre 45 et 75 ans et souffrant d\u2019hypertension ont particip\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tude. Les sujets avaient re\u00e7u un diagnostic de diab\u00e8te (diab\u00e8te sucr\u00e9 de type 2) ou de normoglyc\u00e9mie avant de participer \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tude. Une dose orale quotidienne de 10 mg d\u2019enalapril et de 0,8 mg d\u2019acide folique a \u00e9t\u00e9 administr\u00e9e \u00e0 un groupe, tandis que d\u2019autres prenaient 10 mg d\u2019enalapril seulement. Un suivi m\u00e9dical des participants a \u00e9t\u00e9 effectu\u00e9 tous les trois mois pendant la dur\u00e9e de l\u2019\u00e9tude (dur\u00e9e moyenne de 4,5 ans).<\/p>\n<p>Les r\u00e9sultats indiquaient qu\u2019en fonction d\u2019un taux de glucose donn\u00e9 (hypoglyc\u00e9mique, normoglyc\u00e9mique ou diab\u00e9tique), le risque d\u2019accident vasculaire c\u00e9r\u00e9bral diminuait sensiblement avec la prise de suppl\u00e9ments d\u2019acide folique. Cette r\u00e9duction du risque \u00e9tait la plus marqu\u00e9e chez les sujets dont le taux de glucose \u00e0 jeun signalait un diab\u00e8te.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 partir des r\u00e9sultats de cette \u00e9tude, on peut d\u00e9duire que la prise de suppl\u00e9ments d\u2019acide folique peut \u00eatre utile pour r\u00e9duire le risque d\u2019accident vasculaire c\u00e9r\u00e9bral chez les personnes diab\u00e9tiques. Par cons\u00e9quent, un accroissement de la quantit\u00e9 d\u2019acide folique dans le r\u00e9gime alimentaire devrait \u00eatre une priorit\u00e9. Par contre, sans un acc\u00e8s r\u00e9gulier \u00e0 des grains enrichis de folate, cet objectif peut \u00eatre difficile \u00e0 r\u00e9aliser.
