En el ojo, la lute\u00edna\u00a0es el carotenoide predominante (se encuentra en la periferia de la m\u00e1cula), en tanto que la concentraci\u00f3n de zeaxantina es mayor en el centro, donde las condiciones favorecen m\u00e1s la formaci\u00f3n de radicales libres.<\/p>\n<p>Tanto la lute\u00edna como la zeaxantina son importantes para mantener la salud ocular. En su capacidad de pigmentos, estos compuestos ayudan a filtrar la luz de alta energ\u00eda y protegen a los tejidos subyacentes de los da\u00f1os fotoinducidos. Tambi\u00e9n act\u00faan como antioxidantes y ayudan a proteger la m\u00e1cula de los da\u00f1os derivados del estr\u00e9s oxidante. Ambas funciones ayudan a reducir el riesgo de enfermedad ocular relacionada con la edad.<\/p>\n<p>La zeaxantina se encuentra en muchas fuentes alimenticias, pero la principal son los vegetales de hoja verde (como la espinaca).
