Los oxalatos son sustancias qu\u00edmicas org\u00e1nicas que se encuentran en algunos alimentos (como espinaca y betabel) y suelen combinarse con el calcio para formar oxalato de calcio, sustancia qu\u00edmica insoluble que el cuerpo humano no puede utilizar.<\/p>\n<p>Debido a que entre 20 y 40% de los c\u00e1lculos renales se han asociado con un elevado nivel de calcio urinario, originalmente se pensaba que el consumo de cantidades elevadas de calcio pod\u00eda causar o contribuir a la formaci\u00f3n de c\u00e1lculos. Sin embargo, en investigaciones recientes se ha demostrado que restringir el calcio en realidad puede incrementar el riesgo de c\u00e1lculos renales en determinadas circunstancias.<\/p>\n<p>Mucho se ha investigado qu\u00e9 tanto ayuda la nutrici\u00f3n a reducir los c\u00e1lculos renales. En un estudio del Brigham and Women&#8217;s Hospital y la Escuela de Medicina de Harvard se descubri\u00f3 que las recomendaciones anteriores de limitar los productos l\u00e1cteos como medida para reducir el riesgo de c\u00e1lculos renales eran err\u00f3neas. El estudio sugiere que en realidad el calcio puede ejercer un efecto protector al unirse al oxalato en el intestino y prevenir su absorci\u00f3n en una forma que resulte en c\u00e1lculos renales.<\/p>\n<p>En otro estudio a gran escala sobre el calcio y los c\u00e1lculos renales se lleg\u00f3 a la conclusi\u00f3n de que una ingesta elevada de calcio reduce el riesgo de desarrollar c\u00e1lculos renales sintom\u00e1ticos. Quiz\u00e1 igual de importante es que en el estudio se descubri\u00f3 que los individuos que consumen menos de 850 mg de calcio al d\u00eda muestran una mayor incidencia de c\u00e1lculos renales.<\/p>\n<p>En general, la ingesta de calcio en los alimentos y\/o suplementos no contribuye a una mayor una incidencia de c\u00e1lculos renales.
