Es tan importante, que muchos gobiernos exigen que los granos sean fortificados con folato\/\u00e1cido f\u00f3lico para proporcionar a sus ciudadanos acceso regular y diario a esta importante vitamina.<\/p>\n<p>Investigadores han demostrado que en pa\u00edses con bajo acceso al folato, se muestra una considerable reducci\u00f3n en la incidencia de defectos del tubo neural en ni\u00f1os cuya madre tuvo acceso a la suplementaci\u00f3n con \u00e1cido f\u00f3lico durante el embarazo. Se ha demostrado que la suplementaci\u00f3n con \u00e1cido f\u00f3lico es segura, econ\u00f3mica y efectiva para reducir el riesgo de defectos del tubo neural y otros defectos de nacimiento en pa\u00edses del tercer mundo y en poblaciones en riesgo de todo el mundo.<\/p>\n<p>El \u00e1cido f\u00f3lico tambi\u00e9n ha sido considerado para mejorar la salud del coraz\u00f3n. La American Heart Association (AHA, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s) public\u00f3 un art\u00edculo el a\u00f1o pasado en donde se explora la relaci\u00f3n entre la disminuci\u00f3n en defectos cong\u00e9nitos del coraz\u00f3n y la suplementaci\u00f3n con \u00e1cido f\u00f3lico y la comida fortificada con \u00e9ste. Esta relaci\u00f3n entre la vitamina B y la salud del coraz\u00f3n sugiere que el \u00e1cido f\u00f3lico puede actuar como medio preventivo de accidentes cerebrovasculares e infartos del miocardio, mejor conocidos como ataques al coraz\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>La diabetes, que consiste en elevadas concentraciones de glucosa en la sangre durante periodos de ayuno, es conocida como un factor de riesgo de embolia. Investigadores de distintas universidades y hospitales en China plantearon la hip\u00f3tesis sobre la relaci\u00f3n entre la suplementaci\u00f3n con \u00e1cido f\u00f3lico y el primer accidente cardiovascular asociado con elevados niveles de glucosa en la sangre. Llevaron a cabo un estudio aleatorizado doble ciego durante varios a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n<p>Los participantes en este estudio fueron hombres y mujeres de entre 45 y 75 a\u00f1os de edad con hipertensi\u00f3n, que fueron diagnosticados como diab\u00e9ticos (diabetes mellitus tipo 2) o normogluc\u00e9micos antes del estudio. A las personas se les proporcion\u00f3 una dosis oral de 10mg de enalapril y 0.8mg de \u00e1cido f\u00f3lico o solo 10mg de enalapril. A lo largo del estudio (duraci\u00f3n media= 4.5 a\u00f1os) se realizaron cada 3 meses visitas de seguimiento a cada participante.<\/p>\n<p>Los resultados indican que para cualquier categor\u00eda de glucosa (hipogluc\u00e9mico, normogluc\u00e9mico y diab\u00e9tico), el riesgo de embolia se vio significativamente reducido por la suplementaci\u00f3n con \u00e1cido f\u00f3lico. Aquellas personas con niveles de glucosa en ayunas que indicaban diabetes mostraron la mayor reducci\u00f3n de riego como resultado de la suplementaci\u00f3n con \u00e1cido f\u00f3lico.<\/p>\n<p>De los resultados de este estudio se puede inferir que la suplementaci\u00f3n con \u00e1cido f\u00f3lico puede contribuir con la reducci\u00f3n de riesgo de embolia en personas con diabetes.\u00a0 Aumentar la cantidad de \u00e1cido f\u00f3lico en la dieta deber\u00eda de ser una prioridad para todos. Sin embargo, sin acceso regular a granos fortificados con folato, este objetivo puede ser dif\u00edcil de alcanzar.
